I’ve been taking a weekend-long break from a very depressing job search(lord have mercy on me). Naturally, I turned to Netflix but like most of us,I had already exhausted the new Riverdale episode (holy cow!). I needed some thing new. Fast. With an 8 out of 10 rating on IMDb and an amazing 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, iZombie entered my binge-radar. I was coming down from a murder-mystery a la “Riverdalesque”, a zombie murder-mystery seemed like the best next thing.
From the creators of Veronica Mars, iZombie was pleasantly received by critics. An entertaining concept, adapted from a 28-issue comic book series by the same name and published by DC (Vertigo) in 2010. Rose McIver plays Olivia Moore, a medical resident who struggles with her new identity after a freak zombie-breakout. She uses her new abilities to aid police investigator Clive Babineaux (Malcolm Goodwin) on multiple murder cases as his loopy sidekick.
Funny enough, I can’t believe I didn’t immediately recognize the familiar murder set-up and villain relationship that was so memorable from Veronica Mars. iZombie’s star Olivia Moore shares the same gutsy personality Veronica was famous for. I don’t necessarily consider it a negative though, I liked Veronica Mars.
Although a little repetitive (as is pretty much every crime show), the show has its charms. McIver does a decent job at acting out the wide-range of personalities that come as a side-effect of eating human brains. It’s also great that the producers decided to keep the comic book feel in the storyline. Both with the comic book like picture breaks between commercials/scenes and the familiar “the good guys will never die” bit.
Overall, the show is great for a night-in or perhaps some Netflix and chill. But! It’s nothing like some good ol’ Walking Dead episodes with some classic mindless zombies and more than a few reality checks. Also, the fact that Blaine never dies and has a sorta Spike-to-his-Buffy like personality definitely takes away from the show in some ways (personally). But Olivia’s character is likeable (for the most part), and the concept is certainly unique for its genre.

I never really got into iZombie but that might just be me. It was definitely different, I’ll give it that haha. It’s definitely no “The Walking Dead” but sometimes, when you just want to sit on the couch and binge on something, this kind of show is all you need. Now, you mentioned Riverdale, which I’ve been meaning to watch. Is it good? I’m thinking about giving it a go.
That said, would you be interested in sharing your thoughts and opinions on Movie Pilot? I’d love to invite you to join the platform, and to hear from you so I can to expand on what that means. Feel free to shoot me an e-mail, my contact details are on my “About” page. Hope to hear from you.

Hey! Honestly I couldn’t really get into iZombie initially either. It’s definitely nothing new plot-wise, but it’s a good show to just sit and binge-watch for a while when you’ve got nothing else planned. Riverdale is great! I love that sort of teenage-y drama. Top it off with some murder mystery and it’s a perfect show to watch on a Friday night. Definitely watch it! 🙂
